The 5 Willow Varieties on Currently on Pre-Order
We chose a mix of fine weaving, color and structural willows so you can start a well-rounded bed from one order. The numbers below come from our own second-year stools, not a catalog.
Variety | Best for | Rods on our 2nd-year stools | Dried rod color |
Fine, detailed weaving | About 6 ft, around 12 rods per stool | Dark brown
Weavers, side stakes, fedges | About 10 ft, 12 to 20 rods per stool | Purple-brown
Weavers, hedges, deer-prone sites | About 10 ft, around 20 rods per stool | Light greenish brown
Color accents, compact beds | About 5 ft, 6 to 9 rods per stool | Orange-red
Living structures, winter color | About 10 ft, around 20 rods per stool | Orange |
Packing Twine (Salix purpurea)
A fine purple basket willow from Ireland with thin, slender rods made for tight, detailed weaving. It's also the rod you reach for when you want contrast against thicker rods in the same basket. A medium grower, about 5-8 ft.
Dicky Meadows (Salix purpurea)
A classic basket willow with long, slender, flexible rods for weavers and side stakes. It's fast and productive, and also works well in living willow fences and fedges.
Green Dicks (Salix purpurea)
A male clone, so no cottony seed, with long olive-green rods for weavers, side stakes, hedges and screens. It's rarely browsed by deer or rabbits, which makes it a good pick if browsing is a problem where you live.
Hutchinson's Red (Salix purpurea)
Slender red-brown rods that dry to an orange-red, for color accents in your weaving. It's a compact willow, about 4-8 ft, that fits smaller beds.
Vitellina Golden (Salix alba var. vitellina)
Our strongest choice for living willow structures. Vitellina throws big, strong, flexible rods with bright yellow to orange winter stems, for fedges, arches, hedges, winter color and basketry accents.

How We Harvest, Pack and Ship Your Cuttings

We harvest after our stools go dormant. Each rod is cut into 10-12 inch cuttings, bundled 10 per variety, wrapped in paper, sealed in a bag labeled with the variety, and held in our dedicated willow cooler at 34°F until it ships. Every bundle is tracked from the bed it was cut from to the box it ships in, so the variety on the label is the variety you plant.
Orders ship in winter, timed to your planting zone, so your cuttings arrive dormant and ready to go in the ground.

Willow Pre-Order FAQ
When will my willow cuttings ship?
In winter, while the cuttings are dormant. We time each shipment to your planting zone so your cuttings arrive ready to plant.
Are these rooted willow plants?
No. They're dormant, unrooted hardwood cuttings. Willow roots easily from cuttings, so you plant them straight into moist soil and they grow into stools that produce rods in future seasons.
How many cuttings do I need for a willow bed?
One bundle plants 10 stools. Most home weavers start with a few bundles of different varieties so they have the right rod for every project.
What should I do when my cuttings arrive?
Keep them cool and moist until planting, and plant them as soon as you can. Our guide on how to grow willow for weaving rods walks through planting and care.
Will more varieties be available?
Yes. We're growing 14 varieties this season, and more open as our beds mature. Click "Notify me when available" on any willow variety page to get an email when it opens.
