Seedlings to the Nursery
The grow room at Harmony Springs Farm has officially reached its seedling limit in the grow room. We have over 1,800 plants transitioning to the seedling nursery this week because the next wave of trays is already hitting the germination chamber [cite: 2026-02-05]. If we don’t clear the shelves now, those new sprouts won’t have lights to go under by the end of the week.
This isn’t just a move; it is the start of the hardening off process—a critical biological transition from controlled indoor LEDs to the variable conditions of the nursery and high tunnel.
The Science of Hardening Off

When seedlings are raised indoors, they develop in a "perfect" environment. Moving them directly into a nursery without a transition period can cause transplant shock or cellular collapse. At Harmony Springs, we avoid shortcuts by following the "1-Hour Rule"—starting with a single hour of exposure to build resilience without damaging the "soft" indoor growth.
Cuticle Thickening: Indoor plants have a thin, waxy cuticle. As we move them, the plants begin to thicken this layer to regulate transpiration and prevent dehydration.
Thigmomorphogenesis (Mechanical Stress): Exposure to air movement in the nursery triggers ethylene production, which results in shorter, thicker, and more "stocky" stems that can handle the elements.
UV Photoprotection: Indoor lights lack the full UV spectrum of the sun. Seedlings must gradually build up protective pigments, such as anthocyanins, which act as a natural "sunscreen." This is clearly visible in the deep, dark foliage of our Deadpool Jalapenos.
The April 1st Target

With 1,800+ plants now in the nursery, our immediate focus is preparing the first 200 plants to be moved into the high tunnel by April 1st. We are tracking every variety to ensure they hit their growth milestones before they go into the ground.
As these plants stabilize, we are enabling the "Notify When Available" option on our product pages [cite: 2026-02-05, 2026-02-09]. This allows you to stay updated on the status of specific varieties as they reach transplant size [cite: 2026-02-05].
Update: Our 2026 Bare Root Superhot Pepper Plants are now available for pre-order!
