This isn't a first-year experiment. Bristol PepperFest was founded in 2019 by Doug Hilton, a retired Marine and longtime Northeast Tennessee Master Gardener, and has run every year since — growing from a single parking lot on Sixth Street into a full downtown festival spanning two states. 2026 marks its 8th annual event.

The Extreme Pepper Eating Contest isn't a quick hot-wing gimmick. It's a structured, multi-round competition:

• Up to 12 contestants

• 10 rounds of escalating heat

• A deck of 10+ ultra-hot pepper varieties, hand-harvested and supplied fresh by Harmony Springs Farm (Blountville, TN) and other approved growers

• Official rules modeled on standards published by League of Fire, the recognized governing body for competitive chilli-eating

Registration

Spots are limited — up to 12 contestants per contest, and September 5 is only a few weeks out. Pre-registration for the Extreme Pepper Eating Contest is open now. Participants may also sign up the day of the event, but a signed release form (provided by Believe in Bristol) is required to compete.
