At Harmony Springs Farm, we believe that the secret to growing world-class peppers isn't just about the seeds or the sunshine – it’s about the science. We recently received our latest soil test results, and while we're passionate about our peppers, the results were a bit of a reality check.

The Shocking Truth About Our Soil Test pH for Peppers
Most of our soil metrics were exactly where we wanted them, but there was one glaring issue: our soil pH. It came back at a low 5.2 [00:13]. For those of you who are new to pepper growing, that is way too acidic. Peppers thrive in soil with a more balanced pH, and 5.2 just wasn't going to cut it if we wanted to produce the heat and health our peppers are known for.
Taking Expert Action
When the science speaks, we listen. We headed down to the county extension office to consult with a soil science expert [00:18]. Based on their advice, we’ve implemented a multi-step plan to get our soil back on track:
Applying Lime:
We’ve added 360 lbs. of lime to our high tunnel [00:22]. Lime is essential for raising the soil’s pH and neutralizing acidity.
Hydration is Key:
Lime alone won’t do the trick. We’re making sure to water the soil thoroughly to help the lime integrate and start working its magic [00:27].
Cover Crops:
We’ve also planted cover crops [00:30]. These will help improve soil structure and nutrient content as they grow and are eventually incorporated back into the earth.
Looking Ahead: Science-Based Farming
Our work doesn't stop here. We plan to re-test the soil in March [00:33] and will continue to make adjustments as needed. This commitment to science and expert advice is what sets Harmony Springs Farm apart.
